Part 1: Review Steps, Skips, Leaps, and Repeats
A step is when we move from one bar on the xylophone to the bar right next door. We can move right or left, but we have to move to a bar right next door to make a step. Look at the picture for an example. If we start on low C, D is one step away.
A step is when we move from one bar on the xylophone to the bar right next door. We can move right or left, but we have to move to a bar right next door to make a step. Look at the picture for an example. If we start on low C, D is one step away.
A skip is when we start on one bar on the xylophone, we skip over the bar next door, and we land on the next farthest bar. We can move right or left, but we have to skip over a bar right next door. Look at the picture for an example. If we start on low C, E is a skip away. We skipped over the note D.
A leap is when we start on one bar on the xylophone, and we skip over two bars or more before we land. We can move right or left, but we have to skip over at least two bars. Look at the picture for an example. If we start on low C, F is a leap away. We leaped over the notes D and E. We can also leap over many bars. We could leap from low C to high C. If we did this leap we would leap over D, E, F, G, A, and B!
A repeat is when we play the exact same bar on the xylophone twice. Look at the picture for an example. If we start on low C, we would play low C again to play a repeat.
Part 2: Practice Making Steps, Skips, Leaps, and Repeats on the Xylophone
- Answer the questions below.
- Use the picture of the xylophone to help you answer each question.
- Remember, you can choose to move up or down. Both answers are correct.
- You can use the paper attached here or you can write your answers on any paper you have at home.
Optional: If you have extra time or if you want, you can check your answers
- Look at the answer sheet to check your answers.
- If you made a mistake, see if you can figure out why.
- If you are still feeling a little confused, that is ok! We will keep working on this next week.
